Evening prayer, particularly in its musical version “Evensong,” is one of the treasures of the Episcopal Church. Its origins lie more than 500 years ago in the early days of the English Reformation, when Thomas Cranmer took elements from the Catholic Vesper and Compline services to create a new form of devotion for the end of the day. The result is a structured progression of prayer, praise, and contemplation.
