The Graze V.149: Germination

Dear Friends,

Seed catalogues are gathered on my reading table. They remind me of the promise of spring and the mystery at the heart of life. I listened to this beautiful reflection on corn by Robin Wall-Kimmerer. It reminds me that seeds hold the memories of times past and the hope our ancestors.

As hints of spring begin to appear in Killington - there is anticipation in the air - but not yet! Soon we plant seeds deep into the dark soil and then we wait. It is quiet. It seems nothing is happening. A seed has been planted and if the forces are aligned in the right way, a seedling will appear. We wait for the rain (but not too much rain) and we wait for the sun (but not too much sun)!

We often talk about the emergence of something new happening at Mission Farm. Seeds that have been planted years ago, now emerging as an invitation for connection. We experience that in our gatherings, on the trails, in the garden. What are we doing now to bring forth the future? How do we extend that invitation which was central to the original vision of this place? - to invite community to grow here and to remember that we are nurtured and held by this land.

All the science tells us that we have arrived at a threshold: a liminal space where the Earth’s ancient patterns and pathways—of water and rock, trees and rivers, owls and trout—are changing rapidly. In this moment of great loss and transformation, we can sense the possibility of renewal. The seeds of new beginnings are emerging from deep within the understory, the hidden forces of creation are awakening and slowly taking root. Can you feel it?

Lets plant seeds and be patient. There is a hunger for justice and meaning and community. There is an abundant harvest ahead. May you discover the reciprocity of seeds and soil and the sacred connections in your own heart.
