The Graze V.129: Stick Season

Dear Friends:

It is ‘Stick Season’ in Vermont. This is the season that reminds me that we are always in transition between what was and what is to be. It is also a season to notice the ‘new’. New perspectives are seen as the bare branches frame new views. I feel as if I see things again for the first time!

Wandering through the forest after the leaves have fallen, feels like a journey through a luminous, foreign place. My old dog Hildegard, whose sight and hearing is almost gone, still has a keen sense of smell. (Did you know that dogs sense of smell is 10,000-100,000 times our own. I learned so much about my dear Hildegard from this article!) As I wander with Hildegard, she pulls on the leash as her nose leads us to a deer bed. She pulls me into the tall grass where we discover a snake. It is a gift to be led on such a pilgrimage, following intuitive pathways to sacred sites, even journeys fraught with risk.

I love these walks where we come to our senses together. Maybe that is our true calling - to sense together our place on this Earth.

May our wanderings lead us all to live life as if it really matters,

Lisa
